Articles

A, an and the are called "articles". They are usually placed before a noun or pronoun or phrase or in indirect persons or things we are referring to in a sentence. Articles are two types:

  1. Indefinite articles
  2. Definite articles

And an are indefinite articles and the is definite article.

Indefinite article: 'A' or 'an' is called the indefinite article because it does not refer to a particular person or thing before singular countable noun.

Examples:

  • A university
  • A red apple
  • An umbrella
  • An apple
  • An employee
  • A good employee

Definite article: The is called as definite article please I have a cat. The cat is black. e.g., The woman in blue saree is our English teacher.

Note
It can also be used for plural and uncountable nouns.

Examples:

  • The boys are in the playground.
  • The milk is spoiled.
  • The man who came here yesterday is a doctor.
  • “Article” is the topic in grammar.
  • The next assignment is on Monday.
  • The Sun rises in the east.
  • The North pole is very cooled.
  • He is the president of our council.
  • The principal was on leave.
  • The Himalayas, the pacific, the rivers, the oceans, the amazon, the andamans, the sahara, the thar, the kashmir valley, the philippines.

Adjectives used for nouns:

  • The rich should be kind to the poor.
  • The superlative used for superlative and comparative.
  • She is the cleverer of the two.
  • The higher you go the cooler it gets.
  • The Japanese are known about their technology.

Proper Nouns

  • The USA, the UK, the Netherlands.
  • The flute, the thabala, the Bhagvathaita, the Oddisi, the Quran, the Bible, The taj mahal, the Red fort.
  • the south-west, the North-east.
  • the Indians, the English, the sikhs, etc...

Omission of articles

Named and proper nouns:

  • Mukesh ambani is the richest Indian.

Languages, subjects, games & colours!

  • He studied French.
  • He earned his master's degree in English.
  • He plays tennis.
  • Blue is my favourite color.

Do

  • took my breakfast.
  • told my mother I would be late for lunch.

Metal & abstract nouns:

  • Gold is a precious metal.
  • Honess should be rewarded.

Diseases

  • He is suffering from malaria.

Transport and communication:

  • We traveled by train.
  • He sent the message by email.

Places with primary purpose

  • Mary went to church.
  • Sita went to temple.
  • He went to Hospital.

Prepositions

A preposition is a word that relates to elements. Prepositions which indicate at, on, in, by, before, after, for, since, to.

Prepositions: which indicate a place or direction on, to, from, up, down, within, beside, between, etc.

Phrasal Preposition: due to, on account of, according to, inspite of, in order because of, according to, to, behalf of.

miscellaneous preposition: among, until, above, below, under, length, beneath, over, behind, etc.

  3. She lives in Hyderabad with her family.
  4. Some is standing at the door.
  5. The load passed over the bridge.
  6. We have class at 9.00 A.M. everyday.
  7. They have been friends since their childhood.
  8. The festival will be celebrated in December.
  9. He stayed away until the night to finish his work.
  10. The train has been delayed for 2 hours.
