Conversion of Words

Note

Note A particular word may have a [noun] form, a [verb] form, an [adjective] form, and an [adverb] form.

e.g.,

The deliberate transfer of a word from one part of speech to another part is technically known as Conversion.

Suffix & Prefix: The formation of words through Conversion or any other process is generally done by the use of Suffixes and prefixes.

Formation of Noun from Verb to the necessity for changing the verbs into nouns: → ment, sion, ence, tion, ty, age, -cy, ure, -y, -th, ness, ship, dom, hood, ce

Compounding: It is possible to make new words in English by combining two or more words.

Ex: Main road, moonlight, sunrise etc.Compound nouns: Raincoat, Leather jacket, Wheelchair Postman, British Empire, etc.

Compound Adjectives: Trustworthy, Widespread, Brandnew, Oldstock, Sweetheart

Compound Verbs: Runshot, Stagemanage, giveup, Outwit, Outlook

Exercise: a) Add prefixes to change the meanings of the following words: Normal, like, Partial, Successful, Adequate, integrate, locate, decent, pure.

b) Add suffixes to change the meanings of the following words: Advise, fever, Examine, regular, lonely, friend.c) Convert the nouns into verbs and use them in sentences.

d) Fill in the blanks with the correct noun form of the word given in brackets.

  1. The arrival (arrive) of the train was delayed.
  2. Education leads to national development (develop).
  3. Her decision (decide) surprised everyone.

e) Convert and rewrite the sentences using the adjective forms of the nouns in bold.

  1. It is a problem of “Danger”.

  2. He showed great “Confidence”.3) This mission has "power".

  3. She spoke with "emotion".
